KAY RUANE

I earned my BFA in Studio Arts from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. My work has been exhibited nationally, including at Ellen Miller Gallery (Boston), Jenkins Johnson Gallery (New York and San Francisco), and Lyons Wier Gallery (Chicago). I’ve received honors such as a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a McKnight Foundation Fellowship. My work is held in collections including 21c Museum Hotels, Fidelity Investments, the DeCordova Museum, and the Fitchburg Art Museum. I’m currently based in Los Angeles.

I’ve been drawing since childhood—using the tip of a pencil to explore how we exist in the world, both alone and together. Instead of words, I rely on images to explore loneliness and isolation, humor and wonder, and the overwhelming, visceral details of the earth and our bodies. While I’ve worked in color, I prefer black and white for its simplicity and calm, which balance the density of my compositions. I love the timeless, direct relationship between pencil and paper.
