Julie Yeo
Julie Yeo (1987) earned her MFA from New York University, BFA from Art Center of College of Design, and was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and is on the White Columns Artist Registry. She participated in Felix Art Fair (One Trick Pony,) Tryst Art Fair (KAA Collective,) and LA Art Show (ACCD.) Yeo’s work has been featured in publications such as Art Maze Mag, Friend of Artist, and Shout Out LA. Select exhibitions include those at One Trick Pony, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Idolwild, LeRoy Neiman Gallery, and Lipscomb University.
Julie Yeo explores absence and return through ceramic self-portraits. Coming out of a decade-long PTSD induced dissociative amnesia, Yeo finds herself buffering, waiting for Ghoul (Yeo’s spirit/light). Yeo uses fire and earth to bridge the distance between Ghoul from tender, fractured forms that beckon. Neither fixed nor resolved, these sculptures are sites of yearning, grief, and becoming. The ceramic body is a signal fire, transmitting the presence of a reassembling self.
